Welcome to The Answers Are Out There, where Sean Gerrity talks with innovators who are successfully implementing conservation ideas and making the world a better place for nature, wildlife and people.

Sean R. Gerrity

I am a Founder and past President of American Prairie, which is a project to create the largest wildlife reserve ever assembled in the lower forty-eight states. Starting at the organization’s inception in 2002, I served as president for seventeen years.

Over the past three years I wrote a book about why I left my previous career to take on that new role and how we got American Prairie started and headed for long-term success. The book is called The Second-Best Time is Now. It is being published by Torrey House Press and will be available in 2025.

Most recently, I became the host of The Answers Are Out There podcast. My goal with this project is to spotlight good-news stories about inspiring people from around world who, through innovation and dogged persistence, are successfully solving nature conservation problems.  Rather than focusing on amassing money or fame, their long term goals are to leave the world a better place for all of us.

National Geographic: Last Wild Places

The American Prairie Reserve is assembling land in northern Montana, with the goal of creating a seamless 3.5 million acre grassland habitat. When they reintroduce bison to the landscape, both the ecosystem and local people benefit. The National Geographic Society uses the power of science, exploration, education, and storytelling to illuminate and protect the wonder of our world.

Sean Gerrity’s new book, The Second Best Time Is Now, is coming in Summer 2025 with Torrey House Press. In his book Sean answers questions he has been asked for decades about how American Prairie began and how it became such a success over time. They include: “How did you get it started with very little money, with such a long time horizon to completion and such an audacious vision? What kinds of people needed to come together to make it work? What made you think you could do it? Can lessons be taken from your successful approach and be applied elsewhere in the world? What lessons about leadership in general might be gleaned from this project?” Gerrity’s storytelling makes it an accessible and inspiring read and one that you will want to recommend to others.
